On 16 December 2024, the EU Council adopted formally the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The text, which was approved on 24 April 2024 by the European Parliament, will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in January 2025 and the Regulation will come into force in mid-2026, after a transition period of 18 months.
The Packaging Regulation also introduces a restriction on the placing on the market of food-contact packaging containing PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances harmful to human health and the environment) above certain thresholds.
